Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. -- Taking on their second opponent from the Golden State in as many days, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team secured a 9-0 shutout victory at Whittier College (0-4) on Monday afternoon. The Captains swept doubles by a trio of 8-5 wins and battled through singles for a clean sweep over the Poets.
In doubles play,
Nesh Kumaresan and
Vincent Truong won their second straight with an 8-5 win over Ahmed Amer and Julius Clasen at No. 1 and
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and
Ashton Legum got back on the winning track with a win by the same score against Yash Nagdev and Joey Henderson at No. 2. The Captains made it a 3-0 lead when
Ahun Vodela and
Gus Mitchell paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 against Justin Ninomiya and Maas Jaacobs.
Moving into singles play, Porsmyr Hansen, Truong, and Legum each picked up their second win of the day. At No. 1, Porsmyr Hansen won in straight sets against the Poets top line player, Prayag Ahire, by a final score of 6-3, 6-0. Truong needed a tiebreaker to get by Clasen at No. 2 but pulled out a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6) to complete his 2-0 day. Legum did not surrender a single game in his win over Amer at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0).
Alex Seretis and
Tyler Hyun also won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, as the Captains cruised to the clinching points. Seretis downed Jaacobs by a count of 6-2, 6-1 and Hyun earned a win by the same score over Ninomiya. Finally,
Ryan Monroe captured a three-set win after bouncing back from a tiebreak loss in the first. He faced Henderon and earned a 6-7 (4), 6-0, 1-0 (5) win for the Captains.
CNU will close out its trip to California with one more match at Occidental College on Thursday, March 7. The Captains improved to 5-2 with the win over Whittier on Monday.
