NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team improved to 6-4 on the season with a 9-0 win over Washington College (Md.) on Friday afternoon. The Captains, playing at the Eyre Courts on campus, breezed to the shutout victory on a chilly Spring afternoon.
CNU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles with a win by default at No. 3 getting things started. At No. 1,
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis improved to 8-2 in the first ten duals this season with an 8-0 victory. Trate and Weis defeated Isabella Sorhegui and Soleil Namunyola to pick up the pair's 36th career win together.
The doubles sweep was wrapped up at No. 2 when
Mia Linam and
Samantha Robertson took down Eva Kading and Piper Sartison by a final score of 8-2.
In singles action, the Captains took a 4-0 lead with a win by default at No. 6 before the match was clinched by rookie
Erin Gross at No. 5. The freshman improved to 2-0 this Spring with a win against Carrie Lord after surrendering just a couple of games in two sets, 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman,
Samantha Robertson, then added to the lead with her first career win at No. 2 singles. She took down Kading by a final score of 6-0, 6-1.
With the match in hand, the Captains concluded the shutout with wins at 1, 3, and 4. Linam wrapped up a two-win day with a hard-fought victory at No. 1 against Namunyola (6-4, 6-3).
Kylie Schaefer capped a strong performance by the freshman class with a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 3 against Sartison. Finally, sophomore
Eva Taylor earned the win against Sorhegui at No. 4 in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday morning against Averett University at 11:00 am. The match will be played at the James River CC Indoor Courts and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
