NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Capturing the team's third straight win and fifth in the last six matches, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team improved to 7-4 on the season with a 9-0 shutout over Averett University on Sunday afternoon. The Captains picked up the team's second straight, and third overall, blanking on the season by sweeping doubles and singles action.
Five Captains went 2-0 in the performance including straight set wins for the top three singles lines. Junior
Raine Weis dropped just two games in the second set on route to a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Jennika Jaison on the top line. Senior
Tessa Trate held off upset-minded Siddhi Khandelwal at No. 2 with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 win for the Captains. And, senior
Mia Linam cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 against Keira Gunning.
The trio also picked up wins in doubles action as Weis and Trate paired up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 against Gunning and Khandelwal while Linam played with partner
Samantha Robertson for an 8-5 win at No. 2. Linam and Robertson took down Jaison and Brenda Poulakidas for the win at No. 2, helping CNU get out to an early lead. Robertson joined the aforementioned trio with her second win of the day in a third-set tiebreaker. She took on Dilara Sultanova at No. 4 and split the first two sets in identical scores of 6-4, 4-6. Then, the CNU rookie rolled past her Cougar counterpart in the tiebreaker, 10-5.
The final doubles point for CNU came when
Megan Bauer teamed up with rookie
Kylie Schaefer at No. 3 for an 8-3 win over Sultanova and Elisa Battermann. It was the second straight win for the pair as they drew even on the season with a 7-7 overall record.
Schaefer rounded out the two-win performances on the day for CNU with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Amelie Schroeder at No. 6.
Kiersten Chang stepped in for singles at No. 5, earning a 6-3, 6-4 win against Poulakidas to close out the shutout.
CNU will next face Haverford College (4-2) on Saturday, March 30 as the Captains take on the Fords at the Eyre Courts.
