COLUMBUS, GA. - Christopher Newport University dropped a 3-1 decision Saturday afternoon to East Texas Baptist in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA) Leadoff Classic. The loss was the first of the season for the Captains, who are now 4-1 heading into the second game of the day vs. Illinois Wesleyan.
East Texas Baptist broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post the win. Junior pitcher
Kate Alger, now 2-1, took the loss for the eighth-ranked Captains. Alger allowed three runs on  eight hits and struck out three in six innings of work.
The Captains were held to just two hits, both coming in the top of the sixth frame. Freshman
Candace Slaw reached base on a single to center with one away in the inning, and then stole second to get into scoring position. Senior
Katie Currin was called on to pinch hit, and delivered a run-scoring single to center for the Captains only run of the game.
East Texas Baptist improved to 5-1 on the season with the victory.
CNU has two more games scheduled on Sunday in the classic following the Illinois Wesleyan battle to end the day Saturday.
Keith Parr's squad had both of its scheduled games in the Leadoff Classic on Friday wiped out due to bad weather.
