Fifth-Ranked Captains Record Back-to-Back Victories at Bridgewater College, 7-1 and 4-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University got back on the winning track Tuesday afternoon, posting two victories at Bridgewater College on the first day of Spring. CNU won the opener, 7-1, and then captured the nightcap, 4-1, on a chilly and breezy day at Bridgewater College.

Keith Parr's squad improved to 13-2 with the wins, while the Eagles fell to 7-11 on the season.

Freshman leadoff hitter Candace Slaw led the way at the plate for the Captains, going six-for-seven in the twin bill including a four-for-four performance in the first game. In all, Slaw stole five bases, drove in two and scored twice as the fifth-ranked Captains swept BC.

Junior Kate Alger earned the victory in the first game, throwing a complete game and striking out ten Eagles. Alger improved to 6-2 by yielding just three hits and one walk. Alger also earned her first save of the season, entering the second game to start the seventh inning, and striking out two more to close out the doubleheader.

The Captains rebounded from a Friday loss at Virginia Wesleyan, and opened the day by scoring three times in the second inning and then cruising to the 7-1 win. Senior Brooke Greaver drove home two runs with a fielder's choice and a single, as the Captains registered eight hits, with four singles coming off the bat of Slaw.

Senior Katie Currin hit the only home run of the day, blasting a two-run shot in the third frame of the second game to break a 1-1 tie, and put the Captains on top to stay en route to the 4-1 triumph. Greaver, playing in just her second and third games of the season after returning from an injury, drove home two more runs in the nightcap, one on a sacrifice fly and the other with a single.

Freshman Haylee Callahan started game two and threw the first six innings, allowing just one run on four hits. She improved her record to 4-0 with the victory.

Christopher Newport returns to action on Friday at Captains Park, as CNU hosts NYU for two games. The twin bill is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
