NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 18th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will continue its homestand on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the Captains host St. Mary's (Md.) in a non-conference test at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek matinee, CNU sits at 6-2 on the season, including 4-1 at home. Meanwhile, St. Mary's (Md.) is 4-4 with a 3-3 ledger on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a hard-fought 9-8 setback against Haverford on Saturday, which snapped CNU's three-game winning streak. Trailing by three midway through the second quarter, the Captains cut their deficit down to one on four occasions. Eventually,
Syd Guidi landed the game's final tally, while
Carys May and
Hope Hunter helped corral the ensuing draw with a minute left in regulation, but the Fords held on for the victory.
During the game,
Kelsey Winters recorded five points, including the 347th of her career. That broke the school's all-time record of 346, which was set by CNU Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey from 2008-11. Winters also moved to fifth on the all-time NCAA Division III assists list with her 239th career helper.
While Winters was anchoring the attack,
Julia Iapicca forced seven turnovers, which equaled the third-highest total in program history. Additionally,
Brookelyn Morrison and
Madi Rozgonyi had four takeaways apiece. As a team, Christopher Newport caused 18 turnovers, tying the seventh-highest total in school lore.
Making her own history on the defensive end, Morrison finished the week with 10 total takeaways after notching six last Wednesday against Widener. Her 10 strips equaled the third-most by a Captain in a two-game span in program history.
Overall, Morrison ranks seventh in the country with 25 caused turnovers this year. Meanwhile,
Hadley Chadwick is 18th in the NCAA with a 7.77 goals-against-average, and Winters is third with 26 assists. Winters and Iapicca also rank in the top-100 nationally in points with 36 and 29, respectively.
Facing an incredibly difficult schedule in 2024, St. Mary's (Md.) has already squared off against four nationally-ranked squads. The Seahawks enter Wednesday after falling in back-to-back duels against No. 5 Franklin & Marshall and No. 25 Denison. Earlier in the season, the squad also fell to No. 16 Roanoke before knocking off No. 25 Messiah.
Despite the challenging slate, St. Mary's (Md.) ranks 28th in the country with an 8.12 assists-per-game average. Anchoring the attack, Hailey Betch has 39 points, which places her 19th on the national leaderboard. She sits in the top-100 in both goals (28) and assists (11). Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Allie Greeley has a .431 save percentage and 11.56 goals-against-average, while Rachael Freeman has 12 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls.
In 21 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 12-9 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains posted a 20-10 victory in Maryland. Iapicca led the victors with eight points, including six goals. Morrison also contributed six points and 10 draw controls, while Colin Horton had five goals for the Seahawks.
Following Wednesday's tilt, CNU will wrap up its five-game homestand on Saturday when the Captains host Meredith at 1 p.m.
