No. 39 CNU Men's Tennis Falls to No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan, 8-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan (6-4) on Friday evening at the James River Country Club indoor courts. The Captains (5-3) were forced to pivot indoors after a late afternoon rainstorm pushed the teams off the Eyre Courts in the middle of warmups.

Senior Ashton Legum picked up the lone win of the day for Christopher Newport as the Captains staved off the shutout with a win at No. 4 singles. Legum defeated Albert Sitwell in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0, to get CNU on the board.

In doubles play, Sitwell paired with Diego Segovia for a 8-3 win over the Captains' top tandem of Vincent Truong and Nesh Kumaresan. At No. 2, Legum teamed up with Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and nearly snagged a team point against John Falke and Logan Stoltz but the Battling Bishops second tandem squeaked out an 8-6 win. The visitors made it a doubles sweep when nationally-ranked Sean Keane and Andy Fanzaga defeated CNU's Gus Mitchell and Ahun Vodela, 8-2.

In singles play, Legum highlighted the day for the Captains but fellow senior Tyler Hyun also forced a third set tiebreaker in his bout at No. 6 singles against Shori Nishizoe. Hyun dropped the first set but bounced back to force the extra time with a win in the second. The final score against Hyun was 6-1, 4-6, 1-0.

At No. 2, Truong forced a seventh game in the first set against Segovia, ranked No. 46 in the nation. He ended up dropping a 7-5, 6-4 decision. At No. 1, Porsmyr Hansen also faced a nationally-ranked opponent in John Falke, picked No. 37 in the fall, and suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss.

The Captains, ranked No. 39 in the nation, will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Centre College at 1:00 pm.
