No. 39 CNU Men's Tennis Surges by Centre College With Singles Sweep, 7-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After falling behind 2-1 after doubles play, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team swept through singles action to capture a 7-2 win over Centre College (4-4) on Sunday afternoon. Playing on a beautiful afternoon at the Eyre Courts, the Captains came from behind and edged out the Colonels in multiple matches for the win. 

Ryan Monroe and Alex Seretis led the way by winning in both doubles and singles against the Colonels. The tandem paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles against Chase Turley and Jasper Gazzo to get the Captains on the board. Then, in singles, Monroe went on to capture a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 against Ty Bush. Seretis also fought back for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 against Isaac Flanery. 

CNU caught fire in singles play to capture the team win. Tyler Hyun earned a straight set win at No. 6 against Jett Anderson (6-0, 6-4) while Vincent Truong and Ashton Legum also had straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. 

Truong defeated Ashton Whitt (6-3, 7-5) and Legum capped a strong week in singles with a win over Bo Bush (7-5, 6-4). Rounding out the win for Christopher Newport at No. 1 was Edvard Porsmyr Hansen with a thrilling three-setter against Ben Rueff. Porsmyr Hansen dropped the first set, 6-3, but rallied to force a set tiebreaker in the second . He captured the second set 7-6 (2) and then embarked on a back-and-forth battle in the match tiebreak. The senior team captain edged out Rueff, 10-8, to complete the singles sweep for CNU. 

The No. 39 Captains improved to 6-3 on the season with the win. A scrimmage against Division I Hampton University is next on the docket, set for 11:00 am on Saturday, March 23 before the Captains get back to work on Sunday, March 24 against Averett University at 11:00 am.
