NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University pitching made it 23 consecutive innings without allowing a run on Sunday, as the fifth-ranked Captains blanked Marymount University in both ends of a doubleheader. The victories at Captains Park were both by scores of 11-0, and both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Junior pitcher
Kate Alger threw a five-inning no-hitter in the opener, allowing just two runners to reach base. Alger struck out six and improved to 5-1 on the season. Marymount's only base-runners came on a hit by pitch and a Captains error.
At the plate in the opener, CNU was aided by four Saints errors and scored 11 times while collecting just five base hits. Four of the five base hits went for extra bases, as
Meredith Brickner,
Marly Hoefler, and
Delaney Nuckols all registered doubles, and
Katie Currin crushed a triple. CNU scored six times in the fourth inning to blow open the game.
In the nightcap, another outstanding pitching performance led the way in another 11-0 triumph. Freshman
Haylee Callahan yielded no runs on just three hits as she upped her record to 3-0. Callahan struck out five and walked two in five innings of work.
The Captains registered ten hits off MU pitching, and scored six times in the first inning to jump to a great start. Outfielder
Jules Donnelly and catcher
Maleah Maharty both went three-for-three in the nightcap, and both scored three times in the victory.
Marymount fell to 6-9-1 on the season following the sweep on a cool and breezy day at Captains Park.
Christopher Newport returns to action on Friday, when the Captains travel to Virginia Beach for a doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
