ORLANDO, Fla. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team secured an 8-1 win over North Central (14-2) on Sunday evening to close out their Spring Break trip to Orlando. The Captains improved to 5-4 after sweeping three doubles matches and winning five of the six singles bouts.
Playing at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Fla., the Captains raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles.
Raine Weis and
Tessa Trate paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Abigail Penados and Natalie Bassett. At No. 2,
Samantha Robertson and
Mia Linam raced past Kensington Payne and Anastasia Bozovic for an 8-1 win. And rounding out the doubles sweep,
Megan Bauer and
Kylie Schaefer earned an 8-4 victory against Kate Herlihy and Mikayla Edquiban.
Five of the aforementioned Captains went on to capture wins in singles play as well, earning multiple wins against North Central.
At No. 1, Weis outlasted Penados in the first set to earn a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win. Trate also earned a tight win in the first set before pulling away from Bassett for a 7-6, 6-2 final.
Ending the trip on a high note,
Mia Linam,
Samantha Robertson, and
Kylie Schaefer closed out their wins as well. Linam took down Payne (6-4, 6-0), Robertson downed Edquiban (6-2, 6-3), and Schaefer rounded out the day with a win over Bozovic (7-5, 6-1).
The Captains will return to action with five straight home matches starting on Friday, March 22 against Washington (Md.). That match will begin at 3:00 p.m.
