NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The calendar flips to March tomorrow, a month that was very special last year for the Christopher Newport University men's basketball team. CNU won six straight games last March in the NCAA Division III Tournament to capture its first-ever national title. Christopher Newport begins defense of its crown as the Captains, 21-6 and Champions of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, travel to Chester, Pa., to take on the Statesmen of Hobart College (NY). Tip off time is set for 5:10 p.m. Friday at Schwartz Athletic Center on the campus of Widener University.
This marks the eighth straight NCAA appearance for the Captains, and 27th in the 56-year history of the men's basketball program. The Captains defeated Mount Union in Fort Wayne, IN, last March to complete the amazing run that capped off a 30-3 season. CNU now has a 33-25 all-time record in NCAA play. This is the tenth NCAA trip in 13 years at the helm for CNU Head Coach
John Krikorian.
The Captains are led by senior All-American
Jahn Hines, the Player of the Year in the C2C, and freshman
Toa Hollenbeck, the Freshman of the year in the conference. Both were named to the All-Tournament team last weekend in Fredericksburg. Sophomore
Collin Hines, who posted a career-high 20 points in the Championship game victory over Mary Washington, was selected the MVP of the conference tournament.
Hobart College, located in Geneva, NY, is 22-5 this year and won the Championship of the Liberty League by beating St. Lawrence University in the conference title game. Christopher Newport and Hobart will be playing for the first time ever, although the schools were scheduled to play in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in March of 2020. The game set for the Freeman Center four years ago, and the rest of the tournament, was canceled due to COVID. This is Hobart's first trip back to the NCAA's since that tournament.
Host school Widener University and Roger Williams University will meet in the second opening-round game Friday night at approximately 7:40 p.m. The winners of Friday's games will meet in the second round on Saturday night, with tip off set for 7:40 p.m.
There is no pre-sale of tickets for the NCAA games Friday and Saturday in Chester, Pa. Tickets will be sold on game day at the Schwartz Athletic Center, with tickets priced at $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for seniors.
