Guidi and Iapicca Hit Career Milestones as No. 14 CNU Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Randolph-Macon, 14-9

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Syd Guidi and Julia Iapicca hit a pair of career milestones, while Brookelyn Morrison shined on both ends of the field as the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team stormed past Randolph-Macon, 14-9, on a rain-soaked Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Yellow Jackets, Guidi became the 19th player in program history to reach 100 career goals after landing a pair of first-quarter daggers. Incredibly, 90 minutes later, Iapicca joined the exclusive club after depositing her 100th tally during a huge second-half surge, which saw her score five times in the final 16 minutes of action.

Overall, Iapicca finished with eight points just one day after being named the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week. Kelsey Winters also chipped in with five points, including three assists, while Hope Hunter netted her first hat-trick of the year.

Along with the offensive juggernauts, Morrison was a menace all over the field. The second-year sensation forced seven turnovers, which equaled the third-most in program history and the highest total since Sally Allstadt pocketed eight against Marymount on April 19, 2006. She also nabbed seven ground balls, matching the 10th-most by a Captain.

In addition to her historic work on the defensive side of the field, Morrison plucked five draw controls and added a pair of points to balance out an amazing all-around effort.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 3-0 on the season, while the setback dropped Randolph-Macon to 3-1.

With inclement weather closing in on Jennings Family Stadium, the game began an hour earlier than advertised. Unfazed by the new start time, Christopher Newport starred in the opening period.

Less than three minutes into regulation, Iapicca made a leaping interception near midfield before connecting with Hunter, who opened the scoring after burying a screamer just under the crossbar. Although the visitors fought back and knotted the score at one, the Captains quickly retaliated.

First, on the defensive side, Morrison kicked off her evening with relentless pressure on the back end. After Macon secured a draw, the Yellow Jackets attempted to float a pass up the field, but Morrison crashed down on a midfielder and jostled the ball loose before Maddie Rusinko pounced on the roller.

Later, Morrison came through with a tough ride on a Randolph-Macon attacker while forcing her into traffic. Eventually, she and Madi Rozgonyi punched the ball free before Emma Jackson cleaned up with the ground ball.

Meanwhile, Blake Hopkins also forced a miscue during a shorthanded situation with pressure along the right alley before Morrison added her third strip of the stanza after plucking a bounce pass off the turf.

Taking advantage of the extra possessions, Guidi sank a pair of goals in the final minutes of the opening frame. First, after drawing a one-on-one match-up, she bolted to her right, cut inside, and dropped a high-to-low hammer on the move, which broke the 1-1 deadlock.

Moments later, Morrison drew the attention of two defenders and was pushed backwards on the left side of the zone. Without losing her balance, she backpedaled and lined a perfect feed to Guidi, who snatched the pass and fired a dart into the top of the cage for her 100th career tally.

In the second period, Randolph-Macon fought back and tied the score at three before the Captains erupted in the middle of the quarter. Kicking off the assault, CNU executed a gorgeous give-and-go. In the 21st minute, Morrison handed possession to Winters, barreled through a pair of defenders, and caught the return feed before striking on the interior.

Less than a minute later, Maelyn Eversole dodged a Yellow Jacket on the left side of the field. After leaving her defender in the dust, she dropped a dime to Sloane McDonald, who slipped behind three players and spun a bullet along the right post, which gave the hosts a 5-3 advantage.

Trading blows, Randolph-Macon answered again with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the opening half to knot the game at five entering the break.

After halftime, CNU regrouped on the defensive side. On Macon's initial rush, Rozgonyi stuck to an attacker and forced a pass, which Morrison intercepted on the other side. Moments later, Rozgonyi caught up to a cutter on the inside and helped punch the ball free to kill off another threat.

Shortly thereafter, Carys May stood up an attacker along the left side of the crease and popped the ball loose before fighting through a pair of Yellow Jackets to win possession and flip the field.

Looking to capitalize on the other end, Iapicca caught the eyes of four defenders before looping a pass to Hunter, who skipped a seed into the back of the cage for a 6-5 lead.

Fighting back-and-forth, the two teams continued to trade goals. Every time the visitors would tie the score, the Captains would quickly retake the lead. In the 44th minute, Winters earned a free-position attempt and unloaded a one-timer from the left hash to steal a 7-6 edge. Just over a minute later, after Morrison elevated for an interception on a failed clear by the Yellow Jackets, Iapicca split a pair of defenders on the way to an 8-7 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Needing to sustain its attack, CNU strung together a pair of tallies at the start of the fourth frame. Taking advantage of a power-play situation, Iapicca found Hunter, who completed her hat-trick with a bouncer. Just 20 seconds later, after Morrison collected the ensuing draw, Winters dished to Iapicca, who rifled from the right side.

Staring at a 10-7 deficit, the Yellow Jackets mounted one last comeback bid. Randolph-Macon converted a pair of goals in the middle of the period to cut Christopher Newport's lead back down to one with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation.

In search of another response, Iapicca took control. In the 53rd minute, she put her athleticism on full display. Facing a pair of defenders, she somehow evaded both Yellow Jackets while splitting the double-team. Remarkably, the two defenders crashed into each other and fell to the turf as Iapicca sidestepped the carnage and slammed home her third goal of the game.

Less than two minutes later, the reigning All-American came back for more as she capitalized on a Winters' assist for her 100th career tally, which led to a Randolph-Macon timeout.

Unaffected by the stoppage or the steady downpour consuming the field, Christopher Newport continued to pull away. With five minutes left, Winters absolutely tormented a defender. Facing a one-on-one situation behind the cage, she rolled to her right, hit the brakes, and spun underneath the Yellow Jacket while curling around the right post.

Although the defender was able to regain her footing while trailing the play, Winters once again stopped on a dime, cut back, and fired from close range, which gave the hosts a 13-9 edge.

With time winding down, the Captains put a fitting punctuation mark on the victory. Defensively, Morrison came through with her seventh takeaway after snatching a tough hopper off the turf. Then, on the other end, Hunter faked a shot, pulled back, and dished to Iapicca, who wrapped up the scoring with her fifth dagger of the contest.

Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Randolph-Macon, 34-14, and held a 15-5 advantage in ground balls. The Captains also won 16 of the game's 27 draws. On an individual level, Hunter added two rollers to go along with her four points, while Guidi and McDonald had three draws apiece.

Between the pipes, Bethany Wyant recorded her first career save after punching a pointblank rip past the left pipe on a lengthy surge in the third quarter. She also secured a ground ball, as did Hadley Chadwick, who saw 38 minutes of work for the victors.

CNU will return to action on Saturday when the squad travels to Winchester, Virginia for a 1 p.m. tilt at Shenandoah.
