NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season Sunday after dispatching North Carolina Wesleyan University by a final score of 7-2. The Captains swept doubles action and won four singles matches on route to the second win over the Battling Bishops in 2023-24.
Rookie
Kylie Schaefer headlined the win for Christopher Newport by cruising to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles with partner
Megan Bauer and then clinching the team win with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. Junior
Raine Weis also picked up a pair of wins for CNU at the James River Country Club on Sunday, earning victories at 1 doubles and 1 singles.
Schaefer and Bauer set the tone early for the Captains with a dominant win at No. 3. The CNU pair took down Solomiia Badii and Linda Nhiwatiwa for N.C. Wesleyan to open up the scoring. At No. 2 doubles,
Mia Linam and
Samantha Robertson earned an 8-3 win over Bethan Fothergill and Andrea Elaez Miranda to double the CNU lead, 2-0.
Finally, at No. 1 singles, the Captains' top tandem of
Raine Weis and
Tessa Trate got out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-4 win over Cristina Mendoza Romero and Elisa Mariotti.
Moving into singles play, Weis quickly finished out her strong performance with the win at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-3) against Mariotti. The Captains dropped matches at No. 2 and 3 before Schaefer clinched the match at No. 4. Battling through a three-setter, the freshman won the match against Fothergill by a final score of 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4.
About ten minutes later, sophomore
Eva Taylor closed out her match at No. 5 singles against Badii, dropping just two games for a 6-0, 6-2 win. Finally, in another lengthy match at No. 6 -- four singles matches were stretched to a third set -- rookie
Erin Gross won her collegiate dual match debut with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win over Ajla Selimovic.
CNU will next travel to the Washington and Lee Invite on February 23-24 to take on the host Generals at 4:00 p.m. on Friday before facing Denison University at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday in Lexington.
