LEXINGTON, Va. -- In a nationally-ranked tussle on Friday evening, the 33rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback on the road at No. 25 Washington and Lee (7-0). The Captains fall to 2-3 overall this season following the loss.

In doubles play the Captains won multiple games in all three matchups but the home team pulled away to start the match with a 3-0 lead. At No. 2 doubles, the CNU pairing of Mia Linam and Samantha Robertson had the best showing, winning five games in the pro-set before falling to Margaret Carlton and Grace Lorenz. The No. 3 tandem of Megan Bauer and Kylie Schaefer fought to win three games before dropping an 8-3 decision to Izzy Koziol and Haley Stoltz. And on the top line, nationally-ranked Raine Weis and Tessa Trate suffered an 8-2 loss to the Generals' veteran duo of Lauren Long and Gabi Moss.

Moving into singles play, the hosts clinched the match with their next two wins. The Captains got their best showing from senior Kiersten Chang, winning the first set against her opponent at No. 5, Haley Stoltz. The Fredericksburg, Va. native won the opener 6-4 before Stoltz rebounded for a 6-3 win in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Stoltz pulled away from the CNU veteran to finish out the 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win.

At No. 2, senior Tessa Trate battled against nationally-ranked Gabi Moss for two sets and forced a second-set tiebreaker against the Generals' leader. Moss held off the upset-minded Captain for a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win.

Robertson also forced a seventh game in her second set against Grace Lorenz at No. 4, ultimately falling 6-1, 7-5. Rounding out the singles action, Raine Weis won four games combined in her setback to No. 20 Lauren Long (6-1, 6-3), Mia Linam won two in the second set against Annie Jennings at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), and rookie Kylie Schaefer won three games in the opening set against Riho Iijima at No. 6 (6-3, 6-0).
