NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing indoors at the James River Country Club on a blustery winter Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team improved to 3-0 with a shutout win over Goucher College (2-1). The Captains picked up the 9-0 victory without surrendering a set to the Gophers.
The action started with doubles play that saw Christopher Newport improve to 8-1 as a team in duals this season. Both the number two and number three tandems remained unbeaten for the Captains with the doubles sweep.
At No. 1, sophomores
Nesh Kumaresan and
Vincent Truong paired up for an 8-4 win against Calis Nguyen and Gabe Naftoly. The veteran pairing at No. 2,
Ashton Legum and
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen, cruised to an 8-1 win over Angel Cerpa and Benedikt Rummel. Finally,
Gus Mitchell and
Ahun Vodela improved to 3-0 this spring with an 8-2 win against Goucher's No. 3 tandem.
Moving into singles play with a 3-0 advantage, the Captains quickly put away the match with two wins. Porsmyr Hansen downed Unai Laguardia Alvarez on the top line (6-2, 6-2) and
Ryan Monroe earned a shutout win against Tadeo Aprella at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0). Legum surrendered just two games to Naftoly at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2) to help CNU clinch the win and Mitchell dispatched Nguyen at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2).
The final two matches were won by the Captains in straight sets as
Alex Seretis stepped in at No. 5 for a 6-1, 6-4 win against Cerpa and
Tyler Hyun gave up just one game in a win at No. 6 against Ethan Katz (6-0, 6-1).
CNU gets back to action next Saturday with a tri-match set against Haverford College on February 24 at 10:00 a.m. and a Sunday morning tilt versus Washington and Lee at 10:30 a.m. The two will also compete in a neutral site matchup at CNU on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
