NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The hot start for Christopher Newport men's tennis continued on Saturday as the Captains improved to 4-0 this season with an 8-1 win over 39th-ranked Haverford College (0-1). Four CNU players won in both singles and doubles while playing indoors at the James River Country Club in Newport News.
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen had a hard-fought victorious afternoon after holding off his Fords opponent in tiebreakers at both No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles. First, pairing with fellow team captain
Ashton Legum, the veteran tandem outlasted Haverford's James McKenzie and Kiriin Eicher for an 8-7 (7-4) win. Then, in singles play, Porsmyr Hansen dropped his first set to Stefan Johnson but rallied to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-6).
He was one of the quartet of Captains to win in both formats as playing partner
Ashton Legum also won in singles at No. 4. Facing Justin Minerva, Legum captured a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win for Christopher Newport.
Vincent Truong and
Gus Mitchell were the other two players to earn a pair of wins for CNU on Saturday.
The sophomore, Truong, played with his classmate,
Nesh Kumaresan, on the top line of doubles play and earned an 8-5 victory. Then he turned to singles play at No. 2 and defeated Marko Arboleda by a count of 6-2, 7-5.
The freshman, Mitchell, made it a doubles sweep for CNU with
Ahun Vodela at No. 3, taking down Justin Minerva and Max Beckwith by a score of 8-4. Then Mitchell picked up a straight-set win at No. 5 singles against James McKenzie (6-2, 6-4).
Rounding out the CNU wins was a victory at No. 3 singles where
Ryan Monroe held off Aiden Kim for a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday morning when they host Washington and Lee at 10:30 a.m.
