No. 2 CNU Women's Soccer Set to Face No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis in NCAA National Semifinals Friday

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer National Semifinals are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. (ET) at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas, Nevada as the top-ranked Washington University in St. Louis will take on the second-ranked Christopher Newport University women's soccer team to kick off the final four event. The game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. locally with the second game, featuring No. 11 William Smith College vs. No. 23 Emory University, will be played immediately following at 6:00 p.m. 

The winning teams will advance to the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship Game on Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. (PT) / 6:00 p.m. (ET). Three of the four teams have captured national titles prior to this season as William Smith has won twice (1988, 2013), WashU once (2016), and Christopher Newport (2021) most recently. Emory's finest finish was as national runner-up in 2012. 

Christopher Newport enters the weekend with one of the finest four-year records in NCAA history as the graduating senior class has compiled an unprecedented record of of 79-1-9 in their tenure. This season, the Captains are 19-1-2, adding to a resume that includes a national championship in 2021 and back-to-back NCAA National Quarterfinal finishes in 2022 and 2023. When CNU advanced to the national quarterfinals this season, they became just the seventh program in NCAA Division III history to reach the final eight four years in a row since the tournament expanded in 1997. Amongst those teams, the overall record in postseason play in those four years is a record-breaking 16-0-2, marking the highest NCAA Tournament winning percentage (.944) over a four-year span in NCAA Division III history. 

WashU will counter with an impressive postseason resume of their own, having reached the NCAA Division III national semifinals five times in the last nine seasons (2015, 2016, 2018, 2023, and 2024). The Bears won the program's first national title in 2016 and added runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2023. This season, WashU has been the top-ranked team for the majority of the season and boasts an overall record of 21-0-2 heading into Friday afternoon's bout with the Captains. 

It marks the first ever matchup between the two teams. The Captains are 5-1-1 all-time against teams in the UAA. 

The games will be played at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV with ticket prices set for $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Single day passes for children (10 and under) will be $5. The venue will open to the public one hour prior to the first game of the day.

The Captains advanced to the national semifinals behind a dominant offensive performance over the first two weekends of postseason play. CNU leads the field in scoring offense (5.0) with 20 goals scored in the first four games of the tournament after disposing of John Jay (12-0), Vassar (4-0), Misericordia (1-0), and Johns Hopkins (3-2). For the season as a whole, the Captains rank in the top-25 in scoring offense (3.09) and have registered the 12th most goals scored with 68. On the other end of the field, the vaunted CNU defense ranks 15th in Division III with a 0.455 goals against-average and 18th in shutout percentage (.682). 

Junior midfielder Hanna Heaton headlines the individual performances this season as the Gloucester, Va. native has scored 45 points in her second season wearing the Royal Blue and Silver. She became just the second player in program history to score 45 points or more and has factored into 31 CNU goals this season with 14 scores and a CNU record 17 assists. The C2C Offensive Player of the Year hauled in first team All-Regoin honors for the Captains and has registered three game-winning goals this year. 

Fifth-year senior Emma Ricci leads the team in gamewinners this season with five and is one of three Captains over the 20-point plateau this year. She has 21 points on seven goals and seven assists and has caught fire in the final stages of the season with four goals and four assists over the last eight games. Graduate student Corinne Kulik has also been a major factor offensively over the postseason stretch, scoring four goals and adding one assist in the four NCAA Tournament games. Her goal late in the game against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinal round proved to be the gamewinner. 

WashU will counter with a high-scoring offense of their own, ranking 15th in the country with 3.35 goals per game. The Bears also have a stingy defense, ranking 12th in shutout percentage (.696) including three more clean sheets in the postseason. WashU earned the trip to Las Vegas with wins over DePauw (2-0), Simpson (5-1), Colby (1-0), and Chicago (1-0) during the first two weekends of NCAA Tournament play. 

Freshman Olivia Clemons was named the UAA Player and Rookie of the Year after leading the Bears with 20 goals and 46 points while coming off the bench for WashU. Grace Ehlert has added 14 goals for the high-powered attack with 29 points. In goal, Sidney Conner has logged nearly 1,700 minutes and ranks 11th nationally with a 0.373 goals-against average this season. Five Bears earned first team All-Regoin honors as the aforementioned trio were joined by Ally Hackett and Sophie Viscovich. Hackett is a two-time All-Region pick as the anchor of the Bears' defense while Viscovich has scored five goals and added seven assists out of the midfield.
