Christopher Newport Sweeps Mary Washington, Earns 20th Win of the Season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport secured its second victory of the season over Mary Washington on Thursday night, sweeping the Eagles 3-0 at the Freeman Center. With the win, the Captains improved to 20-9 on the year, marking the program's 25th consecutive season with at least 20 wins.

First Set

The Captains came out firing, opening with a 10-4 run fueled by kills from Samantha Dorn, Alyssa Dozier, and Macy Burk. CNU maintained control throughout, holding Mary Washington to a .028 hitting percentage. With a commanding 20-11 lead, the Captains closed the set on a six-point run to take it 25-11.

Second Set

CNU started strong with a block from Dozier and a kill from Megan James, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, Mary Washington responded and built a 21-16 advantage. Undeterred, the Captains stormed back, winning four consecutive points with contributions from James, Carley Coghill, and Alli Pratt. A clutch ace by Alyssa Vitale was part of a 10-3 run that propelled CNU to a thrilling 26-24 comeback win.

Third Set

Kensie Price opened the third set with three straight aces, but the Eagles responded with a 10-3 run. The Captains clawed their way back, using a six-point streak featuring two kills from James and an ace by Audrey Stenger. A subsequent 9-3 surge gave CNU a 23-20 lead, and Burk delivered the decisive kill to secure the 25-22 set victory and the match sweep.
