Christopher Newport's volleyball team saw four Captains and the coaching staff received major awards from the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) following a stellar regular season. Junior middle blocker
Alyssa Dozier was named Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while senior defensive specialist
Noelle Starr joined her on the First Team All-Conference list. Graduate setter
Alyssa Vitale and fifth-year middle blocker
Macy Burk rounded out the Captains' honorees with Second Team All-Conference selections. Additionally, Head Coach
Lindsay Birch and her staff were named C2C Coaching Staff of the Year.
Dozier led the conference in kills with 311 over 109 sets, averaging 2.85 kills per set while hitting an impressive .305. She also topped the C2C with 113 blocks in a spectacular all-around effort this season. This season, Dozier reached double-digit kills in 17 of CNU's 31 matches, playing in all but one set. She matched a career-high with 20 kills against Marymount.
Dozier collected Player of the Year honors for the second time in her career, making her the first Captain to achieve the feat since Briana Sutton (2015, 2013). This is the second straight Player of the Year award for Dozier as well, making her the first to win consecutive awards since Carley Todd of Salisbury in 2011 and 2012. She joins an elite group of only five players in conference history to earn the honor in consecutive seasons. Additionally, Dozier is only the second Captain to win Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, following Brittany Collins, who won in the USA South in 2006 and 2007.
Coach
Lindsay Birch, alongside assistants
Katie Crofford and
Sammy Carroll, led the Captains to a 22-9 record, extending CNU's streak of 20+ win seasons to 25 years. Under their guidance, the team notched key wins over ranked opponents, including No. 25 Salisbury, No. 17 Calvin, and No. 14 Washington & Lee. This marks the fifth time CNU's coaching staff has received the C2C honor, with the last award coming in 2019, and their 13th time during Birch's tenure.
Noelle Starr anchored the defense with a conference-best 551 digs this season, averaging 5.01 digs per set, her career-high. Starr became only the third Captain in program history to surpass 2,000 career digs and surpassing Jenna Williams for second all-time at CNU. Her season highlight came against Washington & Lee, where she tallied 32 digs in a crucial victory. Starr also contributed 34 aces and 117 assists, earning All-Conference honors for the second straight year.
Alyssa Vitale powered the Captains' offense with 870 assists, ranking second in the C2C and averaging 8.06 assists per set. She added a conference-best 51 service aces and was a defensive presence with 366 digs. Vitale's sharp passing resulted in six 40+ assist matches, including a season-high 48 assists against Albion. She averaged a double double this season and posted 20 double-doubles in 31 matches.
Macy Burk continued her ascent in the program's record books, moving into CNU's top 10 for career blocks with 324. This season, Burk posted 78 blocks, second-most on the team, and totaled 216 kills, averaging 2.14 per set. She played a key role on both offense and defense, highlighted by a season-best eight blocks against No. 10 MIT.
The Captains will host the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament this weekend at the Freeman Center. CNU, the #2 seed, will face UC Santa Cruz in the semifinals, while top-seeded Salisbury takes on #4 seed Mary Washington. The winners will meet in Saturday's Championship.
