LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Taking the field for the final road game of the regular season on Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will travel to the University of Lynchburg. The Captains (5-4-4) will kickoff against the Hornets (8-2-4) at 7:00 p.m. at Shellenberger Field.

The matchup will be the 26th all-time between the two powers in the Commonwealth and features one of the most competitive battles since the program's inception in 1974. CNU is 9-9-7 all-time against Lynchburg including a 2-1 win last season at Captains Field.
This season, the Captains opened the year with a 5-0-3 run through the first eight games and are coming off a 1-1 draw at Salisbury. In the tie, sophomore
Colin Skwirut scored the lone CNU goal, becoming the 11th different player to score a goal for the Captains this season. The defense gave up one goal, lowering the team's season average to 1.31 in 13 games this year. Leading the back line is junior

The offense has been led by
Manzi Siibo with nine points on four goals and one assist while
Jason LaViola has added seven points on one goal, a gamewinner, and five assists.
Lynchburg enters the contest with one of the nation's leading defensive units, ranking eighth in Division III in goals-against average (0.500) and seventh in shutout percentage (.643). Junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso has started all 14 games and boasts eight shutouts for the Hornets. Offensively, Zach Whelan leads the attack with 10 points on four goals and two assists. He has a team-high three game-winning goals this year while William Casey as added a pair.
Following the Saturday evening bout against Lynchburg, the Captains will close out the regular season with two games at home. CNU will host Salisbury on Wednesday, October 30 before welcoming top-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday, November 2.
