Newport News, Va. - Christopher Newport cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Bridgewater on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center.
First Set
CNU's offense and defense worked in tandem to take control early in the first set. After dropping the first point, the Captains responded with four straight points, highlighted by a block from
Alyssa Dozier and
Samantha Dorn, along with a kill from Dorn. Later in the set, with the score tied at 13, the Captains found another gear. Dozier added another kill, and Dorn served an ace to start a four-point run. A five-point burst followed shortly after, fueled by kills from
Megan James,
Avery Hanly,
Kyla McIntyre, and
Alli Pratt, who also notched a block. Pratt capped off the set with the winning kill, securing a 25-18 victory for CNU.
Second Set
The Captains started the second set just as strong, winning four of the first five points behind a solo block from Dozier and kills from Hanly and Dorn. The defense stayed sharp as McIntyre and Dorn each added solo blocks, while Hanly and Pratt teamed up for another. Although Bridgewater rallied late to take a 25-24 lead, the Captains responded with three straight points.
Avery Hanly's clutch kill tied the set,
Noelle Starr followed with an ace, and Bridgewater's attacking error sealed the set for CNU, 27-25.
Third Set
CNU wasted no time in the third set, racing to a 12-3 lead.
Megan James led the charge with two kills and a block, while Dozier and McIntyre also added kills. The Captains held Bridgewater to a negative hitting percentage in the set, and Dozier's fourth kill of the set clinched the 25-20 win and completed the sweep.
