Captains Field Set for Nationally-Ranked Showdown as No. 3 CNU Women's Soccer Welcomes No. 15 Washington and Lee Sunday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Two of the hottest teams in NCAA Division III women's soccer will face off on Sunday afternoon at Captains Field as the third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (12-0-1) will entertain No. 15 Washington and Lee (10-1-0) at 1:00 p.m. The top-25 battle features two of the longest active winning streaks in soccer as both teams enter with a double-digit roll on the line.

Heading into Sunday's matchup, the Captains have won 12 in a row, second only to No. 16 Loras' 13-game run to start the season. Only six women's soccer teams in the NCAA, including Division I, II, and III, have active win streaks of 10 games or more and two of them will take the field in Newport News on Sunday afternoon. Including men's programs at all three levels, only nine teams are riding win streaks of 10 games or more.

For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.

The Captains will be looking for the first win all-time against Washington and Lee as the two teams have matched up only four times prior to Sunday's contest. Last year, the two teams played to a scoreless draw in Lexington in the first meeting since 2009; the Generals are 2-0-2 all-time against CNU.

With 11 games played this season, sophomore goalkeeper Amy Sidaway has surpassed 150,000 seconds played in goal, becoming eligible to be ranked among the NCAA active leaders in career stats. With another shutout performance earlier in the week, she lowered her career goals-against average to 0.25 and ranks first among all NCAA active goalkeepers at any level of play. Her impressive record comes in 29 games played with just seven goals allowed, besting Pomona-Pitzer sophomore Patricia DePalma by 0.12.

The defense in front of her includes a tremendous record-setting pace by graduate student Nyah Savage, who has started all 80 games during her career. With another start on Sunday, Savage will join Shaye Doherty ('20), Julie Jennings  ('13), and Kendall Dishaw ('12) for fifth all-time with 81 starts, pulling within six games of the all-time record set by Keiley McCarthy from 2016-19. Senior center back Reanna Slater has also been an integral piece to the back line while sophomore Bella DiTommaso joins them both as a starter in all 13 games this season.

Led by the aforementioned crew, the defense ranks eighth nationally in shutout percentage (.769) and ninth in goals-against average (0.31). The Captains are riding the second longest shutout streak in program history with a run that has reached over 602 minutes.

Offensively, junior Hanna Heaton became just the fourth player in program history to reach double figures in both goals and assists in the same season when she notched a goal and two assists against Roanoke on Tuesday. She now has 31 points on 10 goals and 11 assists to join an elite list that includes Gabby Gillis (15g, 11a) in 2018, CNU athletics Hall of Famer Victoria Perry (10g, 12a) in 2016, and Amy Petko (10g, 10a) in 2000. Veterans Corinne Kulik and Emma Ricci have added a combined 20 points to add depth up top with seven goals and six assists between the two.

Washington and Lee will counter with a dominant defense of their own, ranking 12th nationally in shutout percentage (.727) and 11th in goals-against average (0.36). On the offensive side of the ball, the Generals rank 44th nationally with 2.91 goals scored per game. Abby Groff has played the bulk of the minutes in goal, boasting a 0.31 GAA with a .880 save percentage. Offensively, sisters Sarah and Megan Zimmerman have each started every game this year for W&L and are two of four players in double figures so far this season. Sarah Zimmerman leads the squad with 15 points on five goals and five assists while Megan Zimmerman has added 11 points with five goals and one helper. Sophie Berman and Emily Burke are the other two, with 10 points apiece.

Following the Sunday matinee, the Captains will return to action on Tuesday, October 22 against Methodist before closing out the regular season on Saturday, October 26 versus Salisbury.
