Lexington, Va. - Christopher Newport handed #14 Washington & Lee just their second loss of the season, defeating the Generals 3-1 on the road Wednesday night.
First Set
CNU came out swinging with early kills from
Alyssa Dozier,
Megan James, and
Samantha Dorn to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Kyla McIntyre led the attack with four kills in the first set. After a Washington & Lee run put the Generals up 23-18, the Captains rallied. Kills from James and McIntyre sparked a late push, as CNU won five of the next six points to cut the lead to one. However, Washington & Lee held on for a 25-23 win in the first set.
Second Set
Dozier and Dorn took over the second set for the Captains. Dozier finished with eight kills and Dorn added six in the second set. Trailing 19-17, the duo powered a late surge with four combined kills, leading CNU to an 8-3 run and a 25-22 victory to even the match.
Third Set
CNU's balanced attack shined in the third set with six different players recording kills. McIntyre and James helped the Captains pad their lead with key kills in a four-point run. Up 22-17, kills from James and
Alli Pratt sealed a 25-19 set win for CNU, giving them the advantage.
Fourth Set
The Captains dominated the early part of the fourth set, winning 14 of the first 20 points.
Avery Hanly,
Samantha Dorn, and
Kensie Price each served an ace, while McIntyre tallied three more kills. After a late rally from Washington & Lee, CNU regrouped, closing the match with kills from James and Pratt before Hanly delivered the game-winning block, securing the 25-20 set and a 3-1 victory.
News & Notes
- Alyssa Vitale and Megan James both recorded double-doubles. Vitale had 32 assists and 19 digs, while James tallied 10 kills and 12 digs.
- Vitale has recorded a double-double in four of her last five matches and averages a double-double for the season.
- CNU has now won 10 straight matches against Washington & Lee.
- The Captains tallied 64 kills, their highest total of the season. It's their most since their win over Washington & Lee last season when they recorded 72 kills in a five-set match.
