ROANOKE, Va. -- Continuing its display of dominance during the 2024 season, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team swept the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference weekly honors for a fifth time on Monday as the conference announced that sophomore
AP Webb was named the Offensive Player of the Week and senior
Reanna Slater collected Defensive Player of the Week recognition. The honors come one day before the next game for CNU as the unbeaten Captains will travel to Roanoke College on Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff against the Maroons.
This season, the C2C has announced offensive and defensive players of the week seven times for 14 total certificates. The Captains have swept the week five times and have had representation in all seven with 12 total honors in 2024. Webb collects her first career weekly honor, joining
Hanna Heaton (x4) and
Grace Shifflett for the Captains this season; Slater was named the league's top defender for the third time while
Amy Sidaway (x2) and
Nyah Savage have also been recognized.
In 14 of the last 15 announcements made by the C2C, a Christopher Newport player has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Of those 14, Slater has been the top defender six times with three coming in 2023 and three more this season.
Already leading one of the stingiest defenses in the nation, Slater and the Captains ratcheted up the intensity even more this week in a pair of shutouts. First, against Southern Virginia, the Keswick, Va. native and the rest of the CNU defense held the Knights without a shot to mark the first time since 2022 that a team failed to register a single attempt in a game. Then, on the road at Mary Washington, Slater and company held the home team to just two total shots and only one on frame. For the season, the CNU defense is holding opponents to just 4.2 shots per game and a paltry 1.8 on target.
For good measure, Slater also added an assist on one of the five goals against Southern Virginia when she set up classmate
Ellie Cox for a scoring strike in the first half.
Also scoring against the Knights was Webb, who registered her first career goal in the win. She managed to win a footrace to a loose ball and get a touch on frame that scooted under the Southern Virginia goalkeeper for the score. Then, wasting no time doubling her career goal total in the very next game, Webb broke free on the left side to receive a pass in the box from Heaton and she finished for her second goal of the week. The tally at Mary Washington held up as the game-winning goal and lifted CNU to an 11th straight victory.
The Captains improved to 11-0-1 on the season with the two shutout victories and have now won 11 in a row with a five-game shutout streak heading into Tuesday's bout against Roanoke. CNU is 71-0-8, extending the program's Division III record unbeaten streak to 79 games.
It will be the 18th meeting all-time between CNU and Roanoke with Christopher Newport boasting a 12-5-0 lead in the series after five straight wins heading into Tuesday evening. The game is the final road test of the regular season for CNU, who will close out the final three games at home. The Maroons are coming off their first conference loss of the season, falling to No. 13 Washington and Lee on Saturday, but had previously gone 2-0-1 in league play including a key 1-1 draw at Lynchburg.
The Captains defense ranks 10th nationally in goals-against average (0.33) and 13th in shutout percentage (.750). Slater is joined by sophomore
Bella DiTommaso and graduate student
Nyah Savage, who will likely become just the ninth player in program history to start 80 games when she is penciled in on Tuesday. The trio play in front of sophomore goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway, the program's all-time leader in save percentage and goals-against average.
Roanoke enters the game with a 2-6-3 overall record including common opponents Emory (L, 0-4) and Southern Virginia (T, 1-1). The Maroons are led by Rebecca Carr with nine points on three goals and three assists this season while Brooke Nicholson has added five points on two goals and one helper.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for Tuesday's matchup at Roanoke -- links to both can be found on the CNUsports.com schedule. Following the mid-week matchup, CNU will return home for three straight home games starting with a Sunday afternoon tilt against nationally-ranked Washington and Lee. Kickoff against the Generals on Sunday, October 20 will be 1:00 p.m.
