No. 3 CNU Women's Soccer Shuts Out Mary Washington on the Road, 2-0, to Win 11th Straight

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team picked up the team's eleventh win in a row on Saturday with a 2-0 victory on the road as they downed the University of Mary Washington. The Captains improved to 11-0-1 on the season with the ninth shutout in 12 games this year.

After recording her first career goal earlier in the week against Southern Virginia, sophomore AP Webb wasted no time adding another to her ledger as she scored the eventual game-winning goal against the Eagles on Saturday.  Junior Hanna Heaton added an assist on the play and Kyleigh Gough scored the team's second goal in the victory.

With the win, the Captains add another win to the NCAA Division III record unbeaten streak that now stands at 79 consecutive games (71-0-8). It marks the 59th shutout in that stretch including the fifth straight this season. The shutout streak now stands at 520:53 and ranks as the ninth longest shutout streak in program history; of those nine runs, three have come in the last four seasons after head coach Jamie Gunderson took the helm.

Holding the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference opponent to just two total shots in the game, the Captains defense put together another stalwart performance on Saturday. Reanna Slater, Nyah Savage, and Bella DiTommaso were locked in for all 90 minutes in front of sophomore goalkeeper Amy Sidaway, who secured her seventh shutout of the year. Gough and Ellie Cox also played all 90 minutes in the midfield as they helped stymie the Mary Washington attack.

On the offensive end, the Captains picked up the gamewinner in the 29th minute when Hanna Heaton developed a chance through the center of the field. After driving by a defender, she slipped a pass to her left where AP Webb was able to break free and win the footrace to the ball between her and the goalkeeper. She stretched for the first touch and scooted the shot under the keeper for the score.

CNU threatened to double the score with back-to-back chances late in the half, but Mary Washington escaped with just a 1-0 deficit at the break. Lexi Hazelgrove and Molly Seventko put attempts on frame for the Captains right before half.

After a corner kick early in the second half, the Captains were able to get an attempt toward the goal, but the Eagles defense cleared it out. On the ensuing re-entry, Gough was tackled in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. She stepped in and had her first attempt stoned, but she was able to gather the rebound and put it away on the second chance.

CNU will return to action on Tuesday at Roanoke College when they take on the Maroons at 5:00 p.m.
