No. 3 Captains Corner Maroons for 12th Straight Victory as Women's Soccer Wins, 6-0, on the Road

SALEM, Va. -- Three of the first four goals came off corner kicks on Tuesday evening as the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team blitzed past Roanoke College (2-7-3) in non-conference action, 6-0. The Captains scored a season-high six goals with five different goal scorers in the matchup as the Captains improved to 12-0-1 and won the team's 12th straight game.

Christopher Newport has now reached 80 consecutive games without suffering a defeat as the win improves the team's all-time record to 72-0-8 in the last four years. The Captains boast the third longest unbeaten streak in NCAA soccer history and are only the second team, behind Division I North Carolina, to reach 80 consecutive games without a loss.

Additionally, the Captains added another game to the impressive shutout streak that has now expanded to nearly 606 minutes played. With a scoreless run of 605:53, the Captains defense has registered the second longest shutout streak in program history. Last year, CNU set the record with a run of nearly 1,127 minutes, but this year's streak surpassed a 602:20 roll in 2008 for second all-time.

Sophomore Amy Sidaway shared the clean sheet with Abby Ochs for the tenth shutout in 13 games played this season. The two goalkeepers faced only two shots on-goal with Sidaway turning away both attempts. Defensively, sophomore Bella DiTommaso played full time with a 90-minute effort to lead the way. Graduate student Nyah Savage, making her 80th straight start, played 85 minutes, and senior center back Reanna Slater was on the field for 50 minutes before giving way to rookie Bella Aguayo for the final 40. Junior Kyleigh Gough was also an essential member of the back on Tuesday with an 84-minute effort in the midfield.

While the defense continued it's dominant season, it was the offense that shined in the win over Roanoke on Tuesday night. Christopher Newport took some time to get rolling as the first goal came in the 36th minute of action, but from there, CNU registered a goal every 10 minutes on average.

The first came off a corner kick, the second of the game, when junior midfielder Hanna Heaton floated a perfect ball for sophomore forward Alex Devers. The second year player notched her first goal of the season with a header by the keeper for the textbook corner kick strike. The goal would hold up as the gamewinner and gave Devers her fourth career game-winning tally.

Just over five minutes later, the Captains closed out the first half with another beautiful corner kick goal. This time, sophomore Brooke White took the pass from the corner after Heaton had subbed out in the final five minutes. White's cross was into the center of the box where junior Molly Seventko dropped back and targeted a perfect volley over the keepers head and into the center of the goal.

Taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, Christopher Newport held an 8-1 edge in total shots in the first half including five shots on-goal. The Captains would keep coming in the second half, scoring four more times against the Maroons for a runaway victory.

In the 51st minute, Heaton and Corinne Kulik connected for a score to make it 3-0 early in the second half. Heaton started the play on the sideline before working a pass inside to Kulik; the grad student then completed the give-and-go by finding Heaton driving into the center of the field. After a couple of touches to midfield, Heaton beat the keeper with a hard shot into the left side of the goal.

With a goal and an assist in the game, Heaton extended her tremendous second season with the Captains by recording her 30th point of the season. She would go on to add a second assist, giving her four points for the fourth time this season. That assist came on the next goal, which again came on a restart from the corner. Heaton left her pass short this time and Lexi Hazelgrove raced to the ball and volleyed in a shot through traffic on the left side. It was the third goal of the season for the sophomore midfielder while Heaton collected her 11th assist. She is the first CNU player with 11 assists in a season since Emily Talotta during the 2019 campaign and she becomes only the seventh player in program history to reach the mark.

The offense kept firing on all cylinders with another goal in the 67th minute when Devers completed a brace for the Captains. On one of the best building plays in the game for Christopher Newport, Kyleigh Gough started with the ball in the back. She played a pass up through the middle for Ellie Cox and the senior took her space up the middle before connecting with Katy Bronski beyond the defense in the box. Bronski then looked across the field and crossed a pass over the goalmouth to the back post where Devers was waiting for the strike.

Rounding out the offensive explosion was sophomore midfielder Bella Ventimiglia with her first goal of the season. The second-year player was in the right place when QB Osuna unleashed a hard shot that skipped right in front of the diving goalkeeper in the 83rd minute. The Roanoke netminder failed to corral the shot and Ventimiglia crashed in for the rebound and the score.

The six goals is the most in a game since scoring seven against Marymount on November 11, 2023 and ranks as the third highest scored by a Captains team under head coach Jamie Gunderson

Christopher Newport finishes out the regular season road schedule with a perfect 5-0-0 record and will now return home for the final three games of the year. CNU takes on nationally-ranked Washington and Lee, ranked No. 15 in this week's poll, on Sunday, October 20 at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
