NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University hosts Dickinson College (Pa.) Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Captains and Red Devils are both 2-2, and both coming off losses on the road last week.
Paul Crowley's squad opened New Jersey Athletic Conference play by falling at Salisbury last Saturday, 42-38. Dickinson dropped a 23-14 decision last Saturday at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.
"It's going to be great playing at home again," Crowley said as he prepared his team for the Red Devils. "We've had three road games already this season and have been home just once, so the next two weeks at TowneBank Stadium will be important for us. Dickinson beat us last year, and they've already beaten a couple of NJAC teams, so I expect it will be a tough challenge."
Dickinson, located in Carlisle, Pa., has recorded wins this year over NJAC members William Paterson (24-0) and Kean (21-14). The Devils opened the season with a 47-21 home loss to Randolph-Macon. DC is coached by Brad Fordyce, who is in his seventh season leading the Dickinson program.
CNU came up just short last week in the final minute at Salisbury in the NJAC opener for both schools. Sophomore quarterback Connor Barry threw four touchdown passes and ended the night with 34 completions and 443 passing yards, second most in CNU single game history in both categories. The NJAC rivals traded punches to the last minute of the final quarter, and the Captains and Sea Gulls combined for 1,033 total yards and 11 touchdowns. Neither team punted after halftime, as the Gulls scored touchdowns on all four of their second half possessions, while the Captains reached the endzone on their first three possessions after the half. Salisbury's defense was finally able to thwart CNU's drive in the final minute to hold on for the four-point victory.
The Captains and Red Devils will be meeting for the second time in as many years. Last year in Carlisle, Pa., the Devils defeated the Captains in overtime, 27-24. Dickinson went on to finish the season with a 6-4 overall record and 3-3 mark in the Centennial Conference.
The battle at TowneBank Stadium will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Captains, and will also mark the halfway point of the year. CNU will play five consecutive NJAC opponents to conclude the 2024 campaign, beginning with Rowan University next Saturday, October 19th, during Homecoming Weekend.
Tickets are available for Saturday's game, and will go on sale at TowneBank Stadium Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. Gates will open at 12 noon.
