NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University returns to action on Thursday as the 17th-ranked Captains host the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center. The Captains enter play with a record of 16-4, and
John Krikorian's squad has won its last four games. The Slugs of UC Santa Cruz are 8-10 and have dropped their last two games.Â
The Captains are coming off a decisive 111-48 victory on Saturday over Warren Wilson College at the Freeman Center. CNU had six players reach double figures, led by freshman
Toa Hollenbeck's 18 points and 17 from senior All-American
Jahn Hines, who was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season.
The matinee Thursday will be the fifth all-time meeting of the schools, and the Captains have won all four previous games. CNU defeated UC Santa Cruz in the C2C semifinals last February in Santa Cruz, 65-52, in the last meeting of the squads.
Thursday will be Newport News Educator Appreciation Game. All Newport News educators, which includes teachers, administrators, staff, and bus drivers, with valid school ID will receive two general admission tickets to the game, while supplies last. Tickets can be redeemed at the CNU Athletic Ticket Office, located in the Freeman Center, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
The game will be played during Suits And Sneakers Week, the signature annual initiative of the American Cancer Society and NABC's Coaches vs. Cancer program, which runs through Sunday. The nationwide campaign unites coaches across all levels of basketball to advance the American Cancer Society's mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Coaches this week are wearing suits along with their favorite sneakers on the sidelines as a visible reminder of their commitment to advancing the fight against cancer. Basketball programs participating in Suits And Sneakers Week will also deliver important messaging about the life-saving significance of regular cancer screening.
Coaches vs. Cancer is celebrating its 30th anniversary during the 2023-24 season. Since being launched in 1993 by former Missouri coach Norm Stewart, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised over $155 million to support the efforts of the American Cancer Society, including screening, research, and patient support programs such as Hope Lodge and Road to Recovery. Â
Tickets for the game will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office, and Captains men's basketball is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at approximately 3:40 p.m. Thursday. Video of all the action will be streamed live on CNUsports.com and can be seen by clicking the link at the top of this story.
