ATLANTA, Ga. - It's been a really good start to the New Year for Christopher Newport University senior
Jahn Hines. After shining on New Year's Day, Hines was honored Tuesday, named the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.
Hines, a Senior All-American from Norfolk, has led the Captains to a 4-0 record since the honor was last presented by the conference in mid-December. He has averaged 23.3 points per game during the span, and was named the MVP of the Captains Shootout last week after scoring 42 total points in two CNU wins over Old Westbury and Stevenson.
Hines then followed those efforts with one of the top individual performances in CNU men's basketball history on Monday. He posted a career-high 39 points in CNU's victory at Berry College on New Year's Day in Mt. Berry, Ga. Hines was 14-of-23 shooting for the day and added five rebounds, four steals, and an assist. His 39-point performance is tied for sixth in single game point totals in CNU history, and matched a 39-point effort from Brandon Jones in January of 1998. Only four others have ever scored more points in a single game (Ted Berry twice, Lamont Strothers, Conley Taylor, and Steve Artis).
Hines, who now has 1,260 career points in 78 career games, moved into 19th place on CNU's all-time scoring list, passing Carlos Heard and Bobby Arnette on the list. He is now 23 points behind Tim Daly for 18th place on the list.
Monday's 76-71 victory at Berry began a two-game trip to the Peach State for the 12th-ranked Captains, which will conclude on Wednesday afternoon at Emory University in Atlanta. The Eagles are 8-2 this year, and it will be just the second meeting all-time of the programs. Emory won the first meting at the Freeman Center in November of 2013, 92-90.
Captains men's basketball is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday from Emory's Woodruff Physical Education Center in Atlanta.
