LEXINGTON, Va. -- In their second straight matchup against a team without a loss this season, the second-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will put their undefeated record on the line this Sunday, October 1 at Washington and Lee University (5-0-2). The Captains (9-0-0) will kickoff against the Generals at 2:00 p.m. for the first matchup between the two programs since 2009.
The Captains are coming off a 1-0 victory against No. 12 Wisconsin-La Crosse last weekend -- a team that was 7-0-0 prior to facing CNU. On Sunday, CNU will take on the host Generals who enter the weekend with a 5-0-2 record and a Saturday morning matchup with Randolph-Macon College. It just the fourth time ever the two in-state foes will face off with the Generals owning a 2-0-1 edge in the all-time series. All four games have been played in Lexington.
Christopher Newport will be coming off an eight-day break after last playing on Saturday, September 23 against the La Crosse. Sunday's game will kick off a three-game road swing for the Captains, who boast the longest active road winning streak in the NCAA. CNU has won 16 straight games while playing as the visitor, dating back through the start of the 2021 season and doubling the previous program record of eight consecutive road wins set between October 28, 2015 and October 22, 2016.
The defense has been a dominant asset for the Captains this season as the squad has not yet surrendered a goal in the run of play. Two goals have been notched against the suffocating CNU defense, with both coming from the penalty spot, as the starting back line of
Jackie Stallard,
Reanna Slater, and
Nyah Savage has continuously limited their opponents opportunities. This season, teams have mustered just 4.9 shots per game with only 2.0 on frame; the Captains rank ninth nationally in goals-against average.
On the other end, the offense has been shot-heavy with 228 total attempts and an average of over 25 per game so far this year. CNU ranks seventh nationally in attempts per game while scoring just under two goals per contest. Rookie
Alex Devers and senior
Corinne Kulik top the attack with six points each while midfielder
Kyleigh Gough has added five points on a pair of goals and one helper.
CNU will be taking on a Washington and Lee squad that has been equally dangerous on the offensive end, averaging 2.43 goals per game while ranking 19th in the nation in shots per game. The Generals put nearly half of their total attempts on target, forcing goalkeepers to make the play with over 10.3 shots on-goal per game. Cameron Grainger leads the Generals attack with four goals and one assist this season for nine points while one of six W&L players with multiple goals so far.
Washington and Lee was ranked in the top-25 last week before a 2-2 draw against Shenandoah saw them slip back into the "others receiving votes" category.

Following the Sunday afternoon action, the Captains will return home before a trip to Mary Washington next weekend on Saturday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m.
