Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The fall portion of the Christopher Newport men's tennis schedule came to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Captains finished out play at the 2023 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. A pair of CNU doubles teams surged into the quarterfinals of the championship draw and rookie
Gus Mitchell won his flight in singles play to highlight the Captains' performance on Saturday.
In doubles action,
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and
Ashton Legum snagged their second straight win over a seeded partnership as they downed #10 Josh Rassin and Heys Parker by a score of 8-7 (4). The thrilling run to the quarterfinals would end their, however, as the second-seeded pairing from Mary Washington, Peter Leese and Rishi Charan Shankar, dispatched of the veteran CNU duo, 8-5.
The other Captains tandem still playing in the doubles championship draw suffered a similar fate on Saturday, winning their first match to play into the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
Vincent Truong and
Nesh Kumaresan defeated Keith Orr and DOminick Suwak by a final score of 8-7 (0) and were pit against the #3 seeded Derek Wong and Akshay Joshi from Carnegie Mellon in the quarters. The battle was back-and-forth but ultimately the Tartans outlasted CNU in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3).
In singles play, the Captains were led by
Gus Mitchell in the B2 Singles Draw. Taking on a pair of tough opponents from Mary Washington, the CNU freshman took down Drew Campbell (7-5, 6-1) in the semifinals and then defeated Andrew Cooper in the finals.
Porsmyr Hansen and Truong also had wins in singles play on Saturday while playing in the consolation bracket for the championship draw. Porsmyr Hansen defeated Salisbury's Gianluca Beaujon in a 6-2, 6-0 final and Truong snagged a win over Unai Laguardia Alvarez out of Goucher, 6-1, 6-1.
Christopher Newport will return to action in early February as the dual season opens up on February 9 against Hampden-Sydney.
