DANVILLE, Va. - Christopher Newport topped Averett in a four set match on Saturday afternoon to win their eighth match in a row.
First Set (Captains 25-15)
After five straight Averett points tied the set at 8, Christopher Newport scored the next six points in a row to retake a 14-8 lead.
Samantha Dorn had three of her team-leading 13 kills along with a block as part of this run. Dorn would go on to have another block with
Alyssa Dozier to give the Captains a ten point lead.
Macy Burk struck for a kill to bring up set point, and Dorn came through again with a set-sealing kill.
Second Set (Captains 25-27)
The Captains jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set with service aces from
Alyssa Dozier and
Megan James. The Cougars work to come back and tie the score at 21. The two sides traded points until the Cougars found two points in a row to force a set point. Dozier and Dorn hit back-to-back kills for a CNU set point, but Averett scored the next three in a row to take the second set.
Third Set (Captains 25-20)
Averett scored the first four points of the third set and held the lead up until CNU scored four in a row to gain a 12-10 lead. Dorn added two kills as part of the run, and
Simara Alexander added two kills as part of five straight points for CNU later in the set.
Alyssa Dozier finished off Averett in the second set with her third kill to claim another set for the Captains.
Fourth Set (Captains 25-15)
The Captains quickly took control of the second set as they seized a 14-2 lead to start out. The Captains served five aces including three in a row from
Noelle Starr as part of their early advantage.
Samantha Dorn later added three aces of her own as part of five straight points later in the set, and a kill from
Macy Burk helped CNU wrap up the fourth set and another win.
News & Notes
- The eight match win streak is the longest for CNU since last season, but that streak included one postseason match. That makes this streak the longest regular season winning streak for the Captains since September of 2021.
- Both Sammy Carroll (45 assists, 10 digs) and Samantha Dorn (13 kills, 11 digs) posted double doubles in Saturday's match.
- The Captains served 15 aces, their most in a match of less than five sets this season.
- CNU held Averett to a hitting percentage of .092, the second time this season they've held an opponent below .100.
