Christopher Newport Volleyball takes Double Victory in Santa Cruz Matches

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - Christopher Newport won both matches on their Saturday slate in Santa Cruz, defeating Colorado College and UC Santa Cruz.

Christopher Newport 3, Colorado College 2 | (25-23, 20-25, 13-25, 29-27, 15-8)

First Set

A Colorado service error tied the match at six, and a kill from Simara Alexander and an ace from Sammy Carroll. After three missed attacks by the Tigers, Samantha Dorn hit a kill to open a 12-6 lead for the Captains. Kills from Alyssa Dozier and Dorn helped hold off a late comeback attempt from Colorado and claim the first set for CNU.

Second Set

The Tigers held the lead for most of the second set, but the Captains fought back late in the second set. Sammy Carroll served an ace before kills from Dozier and Alexander helped the Captains get within four, but Colorado won the fourth set point to even the set score at one.

Third Set

The Captains found themselves down early in the third set and weren't able to recover. Dorn and Noelle Starr served aces and Alyssa Dozier added two kills, but Colorado won the third set to move up 2-1.

Fourth Set

Christopher Newport recovered from an early deficit with a six point run led by three kills from Samantha Dorn. She finished the fourth set with six kills, including her sixth that tied the score at 25 and extended the set. The Captains brought up set point after a missed attack and an ace from Dorn, but the Tigers took the next point to tie the score at 27. Macy Burk's kill brought up another set point, and Noelle Starr served her second ace of the match to take the fourth set in favor of CNU.

Fifth Set

CNU took the first four points of the fifth set to force a Colorado timeout. Later, Dorn contributed two kills to a 4-0 CNU run that gave the Captains a 8-3 lead. Kyla McIntyre hit two kills in another 4-0 CNU run that set up match point, and McIntyre delivered the finishing blow with her third kill of the set.

Christopher Newport 3, UC Santa Cruz 1 | (16-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-18)

First Set

UC Santa Cruz took the first set hitting .440. The Captains stayed close through the early part of the set, but were unable to keep pace with the Slugs' hitting as they took the final four points of the set.

Second Set

CNU flipped the script from the first set and hit .414 in the second set. Samantha Dorn hit three kills in the first six points as she helped the Captains out to a 5-1 lead. Alyssa Dozier added three kills of her own as the Captains won four points in a row to open a 14-7 advantage. Kyla McIntyre hit a kill to start a 6-2 run that ended with back-to-back kills from Dozier and the Captains taking the second set.

Third Set

Tied at 16, CNU took five of the next six points with kills from Kyla McIntyre and Alyssa Dozier to move ahead 21-17. McIntyre and Dozier added two more kills, but the Banana Slugs came back to make it a one point set at 23-22. A missed serve and a missed attack from UCSC helped CNU take the third set.

Fourth Set

Julia Gleason's ace saw the Captains win their fourth straight point to start the fourth set off with a 4-1 lead. UCSC worked their way back to remain even with CNU, but back-to-back aces from Sammy Carroll, her third and fourth of the match, helped the Captains move ahead. Two kills from Samantha Dorn helped the Captains move closer to set point, and the Captains got there with kills from McIntyre and Carroll along with an ace from Noelle Starr.
