FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After the first day of action at the 2023 ITA Southeast Regional Championships, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team was led by the doubles pairings, picking up three wins on the first day. A pair of Captains' duos will play in Saturday's Round of 16 action in the Championship Draw including veteran combo Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and Ashton Legum, who earned a pair of wins on Friday. 

Porsmyr Hansen and Legum earned a quick first round victory over Eshan Degamwar and Nicolas Stromberg from Marymount, 8-1, before picking up a pivotal win over a seeded opponent in the Round of 32. Taking on sixth-seeded Allen Gong and Daniel Ardila from Johns Hopkins, the CNU tandem captured an 8-5 win and advanced to the Round of 16. 

In Saturday's morning matchup, the Captains' pair will face off against the #10 seeded pair from Washington and Lee University, Josh Rassin and Heys Parker. They will face off at 8:00 am. Also taking the courts at 8:00 am will be teammates Vincent Truong and Nesh Kumaresan, who held serve as the #5 seeded pairing on Friday. Truong and Kumaresan earned a first-round bye and then downed Averett's Aliaksandr Rudy and Alex Donnelly by a count of 8-5. They will be across the net from Keith Orr and Dominick Suwak from Shenandoah on Saturday. 

In singles action, newcomer Gus Mitchell snagged a pair of wins in the B2 Draw to advance to the bracket semifinals. He defeated Prabjeet Sign Chandhok from Averett, 8-4, and then Dillon McReynolds, out of Hampden-Sydney, 8-3. The freshman will look for a berth to the B2 finals with his first match on Saturday against Mary Washington's Drew Campbell at 11:00 am.
