Captains Down Randolph-Macon in Three Sets

ASHLAND, Va. - Christopher Newport posted eight blocks as a team and Samantha Dorn led a strong Captain attack with 14 kills as CNU took down Randolph-Macon in three sets on Tuesday night.

First Set (Captains 25-20)

The two sides started even in the first set, with three straight kills by the Yellow Jackets helped them shrink CNU's lead to 21-20. But Alyssa Dozier quickly responded with back-to-back kills. A missed attack from RMC brought up set point, and Julia Gleason aced the next serve to win the first set for Christopher Newport.

Second Set (Captains 25-22)

The second set was much like the first with neither side able to gain the advantage. Dozier tied the match at 21 and Samantha Dorn followed up with a kill of her own to take the lead. After a point for both sides, Dorn struck again with back-to-back kills to help CNU take the second set 

Third Set (Captains 26-24)

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set and held that lead through most of the third set. Five straight points later in the set gave RMC a 20-13 lead. But trailing 22-15, the Captains responded with seven points in a row, including three kills from Macy Burk, that tied the score at 22. Randolph-Macon claimed the next two points which brought up set point for RMC, but Burk struck for her fourth kill of the set to bring the score within one. Kyla McIntyre's kill on the following point tied the set at 24, and Dorn and Dozier closed out the set and match with kills to finish off a three set win.

News & Notes

  • Samantha Dorn posted her first career double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs
  • The Captains finished with eight blocks, their most in a match of less than five sets this season. Macy Burk and Simara Alexander led the team with four each.

Christopher Newport heads down to Danville on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. match against Averett.
