Christopher Newport rallied late in the fourth set to force a fifth, but couldn't overcome Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon in their second loss of the season.
First Set (Captains 26-24)
The Lions took six of seven points late in the first set to take a 23-22 lead, but
Samantha Dorn followed a MSJ service error with her third kill of the set to give CNU set point. MSJ tied the score at 24, but Dorn added another kill ahead of a Lion error to claim the first set for the Captains.
Second Set (Mt. St. Joseph 25-10)
Mount St. Joseph hit a match-best .333 percent in the second set. They won 16 of 18 points down the stretch to even the match score at 1-1.
Third Set (Mt. St. Joseph 25-23)
Samantha Dorn added five more kills in the third set. She would finish the match leading the Captains with 16. Her fifth kill in the third set was part of a nice run for CNU that saw them take five of six points and take a 21-17 lead. But the Lions fought back and scored five in a row to set up set point and ultimately, win the third set.
Fourth Set (Captains 25-23)
The Captains found themselves trailing early in the fourth set, but two more kills from Dorn helped spark a comeback for CNU.
Alyssa Dozier added a kill and an ace to help CNU take a 19-16 advantage. Dozier would come through again with the kill to break a 23-23 tie and bring up set point before
Noelle Starr's service ace clinched the fourth set for the Captains.
Fifth Set (Mt. St. Joseph 15-13)
CNU started strong in the fifth set, but Mount St. Joseph came back to tie the score at 9. The two sides traded points after, but it was Mount St. Joseph who would rally to take the final three points and win the match.
