NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- No. 25 Christopher Newport's
Noelle Starr surpassed 1000 career digs on Wednesday night, but the Captains fell in five sets to Virginia Wesleyan.
First Set (Captains 25-15)
A 8-0 run helped the Captains put some space between them and their opponent.
Alyssa Dozier contributed two kills to the run that put CNU up by ten and brought up set point. A Marlin service error closed out the first set and put the Captains ahead early.
Second Set (Virginia Wesleyan 25-17)
Virginia Wesleyan began the second set with a 6-1 start.
Samantha Dorn had four of her team-leading 17 kills in the second set, but Virginia Wesleyan prevailed with three straight points to finish out the second set and even the score at one.
Third Set (Virginia Wesleyan 25-21)
Trailing by five points late in the third set, kills from
Kyla McIntyre and
Alyssa Dozier brought the Captains back within three. Dozier and Burk went back-to-back with kills after a VWU point to bring CNU within two, but the Captains weren't able to complete the comeback as the Marlins took a 2-1 lead.
Fourth Set (Captains 28-26)
The Captains faced match point after a VWU kill set the score at 24-23 Marlins. A kill from Dorn tied the score at 24, but the Marlins retook the lead before surrendering a point to an attacking error. Down 26-25, the Captains claimed three straight points from an
Alyssa Dozier kill, a bad set, and a service ace from
Sammy Carroll to win the fourth set.
Fifth Set (Virginia Wesleyan 15-13)
CNU took four of the first six points of the fifth set, but the Marlins came back and took a 7-5 lead. McIntyre and Dozier contributed kills to put the Captains back ahead, 9-8, but Virginia Wesleyan charged back with three straight points. Facing match point again, the Captains saw a Marlin attack go wide before
Megan James served an ace to bring the Captains within one, but VWU managed to hold off the Captains and take the final point of the match.

- Noelle Starr led the Captains with 28 digs as she crossed the 1000 dig threshold. She's the first CNU player to do so since Rebecca Frey did so last season.
- Freshman Samantha Dorn led the Captains in kills for the fourth straight match with a career-best 17.
- Alyssa Dozier added eight blocks to her team-leading total of 18.
- The Captains totaled their most kills (62) and most blocks (13) of any match this season, including two other five set matches.

Christopher Newport travels to Pennsylvania this weekend for three matches in the Asics Invitational, hosted by Juniata. The Captains square off with the hosts at 3:00 pm before facing Carnegie Mellon at 5:00 pm.
