Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Captains had a strong showing in doubles play as a team and
Ryan Monroe led the way in singles action as the Christopher Newport men's tennis team opened the 2023-24 season with a winning record at the CNU Fall Invite. The Captains went 7-2 in doubles action while Monroe finished with two wins in the singles bracket.
Monroe was playing in the White East bracket over the weekend and picked up a straight set win over Keith Orr (Shenandoah) in his opener. In the semifinals, he downed teammate
Gus Mitchell in a thrilling back-and-forth bout 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, before advancing to the bracket final against Shenandoah's Dominick Suwak.
Mitchell's lone loss in singles came at the hands of Monroe as the rookie opened his collegiate career with a 2-1 start. Mitchell outlasted Tiziano Chialva (Washington (Md.)) for a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 win and added a straight-set win over Carlos Rullan (Virginia Wesleyan), 6-4, 6-4.
The rest of the CNU squad picked up one win apiece with
Tyler Hyun winning his lone match while
Peter Karanski,
Ashton Legum,
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen,
Vincent Truong, and
Ahun Vodela all getting into the win column.
In doubles play, three CNU tandems went a perfect 2-0 this weekend.
Nesh Kumaresan played with Truong while Porsmyr Hansen and Legum paired up in the championship draw. Both sets of teammates won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches and then were lined up to appear against eachother in the finals. Kumaresan and Truong beat Ravichandran and Chialva from Washington (Md.), winning 8-5, before also downing Keith Orr and Suwak in an 8-7 (4) final. Porsmyr Hansen and Legum defeated Felix Bevc and Ole Behrmann from Virginia Wesleyan, 8-7 (7), before advancing to the final with an 8-4 win over Jovan Cirkovic and Artem Babaiev.
The other pair of Captains that went 2-0 were Hyun and Mitchell, picking up wins in the first and third rounds of the White Main Draw. The CNU duo defeated Jorge Urgal and Ludwigstorff, 8-4, and Neal Love and Anton McCloskey, 8-5.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 29-October 1 at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted in Fredericksburg, Va.
