RALEIGH, N.C. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face its fourth straight road test on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains travel to Meredith for a non-conference battle at the MC Turf Field.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport sits at 7-6 on the season, including 3-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Meredith is currently 10-3 overall and 5-2 at home. The Avenging Angels have a road trip to Greensboro on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before welcoming the Captains to town on Wednesday.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at GoAvengingAngels.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are looking to bounce back after seeing their five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday at No. 17 Roanoke. Against the nationally-ranked Maroons, Christopher Newport pulled within two with six minutes remaining in regulation, but Roanoke responded on the way to a 12-7 win. Kelsey Winters came through with a team-high five points, including four assists. Syd Guidi and Hope Hunter also added multi-goal efforts, while Hadley Chadwick collected six saves.

On Saturday, Brookelyn Morrison posted two draw controls, which bumped her team-leading total to 45 on the season. That stands as the second-highest total by a freshman in school history, just 21 shy of matching former All-American Meaghan Galvin's rookie record set in 2014.

Morrison's efforts have helped the Captains continue to lead the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference in draws per game with a 13.46 team average. That also stands as the highest rate by the squad since 2019. Along with Morrison, Guidi has 36 draw controls, while Emma Jackson has 33. Julia Iapicca also slots third on the team with 27.

Overall, the 2023 squad is just the third team in the past decade with four players boasting at least 25 draw controls in a single campaign. Only the 2013 and 2019 teams have had an equally balanced group of standouts on the draw.

Along with their work on the draw, the Captains have also been successful at generating turnovers. The team is averaging 12.38 takeaways per contest, which stands as the highest rate in program history and the finest mark in the league this year. Maddie Rusinko currently leads the conference with 20 caused turnovers, while Jackson is second with 19.

Meredith comes into the week on a six-game winning streak, including back-to-back shutouts against N.C. Wesleyan and William Peace. Overall this season, the Avenging Angels rank 30th in the NCAA in scoring defense, limiting their opposition to 7.62 goals per game. Eight of their opponents have scored fewer than 10 goals this year.

On an individual level, Madeline Horrell has a .483 save percentage and 8.14 goals-against-average, whiler Meredith Sinkler leads the squad with 20 takeaways. On the offensive end, Lauryn Turner has 55 points, while Jessica Dowdy and Reese Walker have both topped 40. Dowdy has also collected 57 draw controls, 22 ground balls, and 17 caused turnovers.

In five previous battles between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 4-1 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains notched a 19-6 triumph in Newport News. Guidi had six goals for the victors, while Madi Rozgonyi had seven takeaways. Additionally, Blake Hopkins and Riley Rafterry-Lee both caused two turnovers and scored a goal in the victory.

After Wednesday, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. for a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference showdown at Mary Washington.
