SALEM, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will put its five-game winning streak on the line on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Captains face a nationally-ranked test against No. 17 Roanoke at Kerr Stadium.
Coming into the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 7-5 overall, including 3-0 on the road. Meanwhile, Roanoke is 10-2 with a 5-1 ledger at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at RoanokeMaroons.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
The Captains are coming off of a commanding 20-10 victory at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. The 20 goals equaled the most in a road game since the squad dropped 22 at N.C. Wesleyan on March 2, 2020. It also marked the fifth straight game in which the team has registered at least 15 tallies. That stands as the longest streak since 2013.
On an individual level, four players accounted for 18 of the team's 20 goals against the Seahawks.
Julia Iapicca netted a career-high six strikes, while
Kelsey Winters added five. Rounding out the high-volume scorers,
Brookelyn Morrison had four goals, and
Hope Hunter registered her second hat-trick of the season.
In addition to her work on the offensive end, Morrison chipped in with 10 draw controls, which equaled the second-most by a freshman in school history. The first-year phenom now has 43 draws this season, which ranks third in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference and equals the second-most by a first-year competitor in program lore.
Along with Morrison, several other Captains also rank near the top of the league charts this season. Winters leads the conference with 36 assists and sits second with 60 points. Equally impactful on the offensive end, Iapicca is third in the league with 36 goals, while Guidi is fifth with 26. On the other end,
Maddie Rusinko is tied for the top spot with 27 ground balls. She and
Emma Jackson are also tied for first with 19 takeaways apiece.
Roanoke enters Saturday on a two-game roll, including a 10-7 triumph at Lynchburg on Wednesday. The Maroons have only two setbacks this season, and both losses came against top-five opponents. The team dropped a 16-9 decision at No. 4 TCNJ on March 18 before falling at home against No. 2 Washington & Lee, 17-7, on April 5.
Boasting a top-flight defense, Roanoke has allowed just 7.50 goals per game this season, which ranks 24th in the NCAA. The squad has also excelled at protecting the ball, allowing just 11.83 turnovers per contest. That stands as the third-lowest rate in the country. On an individual level, Kyleigh Chickering is 29th in the nation with a 7.99 goals-against-average, while Sophia Chickering has a team-high 69 draw controls. Addison Schmidt and Natalie Mason have also combined for 55 takeaways, while Grace Koutouzis, Lilly Blair, and Libby Bowman all have at least 45 points apiece.
In the all-time series, the two programs have split the previous 18 meetings. Last year, Roanoke picked up a 15-11 win in Newport News.
Kendall Krause recorded six goals, while Guidi collected 10 draws for the Captains. The Maroons were led by Blair, who had six points and five draw controls.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will return to action on April 19 for a 4 p.m. trip to Meredith.
