NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Behind a two-win day by senior
Kendra Womack, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team picked up their second win of the weekend by downing Rhodes College, 5-4. Womack won at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 singles while
Tessa Trate secured the match-clinching win at No. 2.
The Captains took a 2-1 lead after doubles, earning an 8-4 win at No. 2 and an 8-3 win at No. 3. In singles play, CNU teetered back-and-forth with the Lynx before Womack gave the Captains a 4-3 lead. Simultaneously, Trate rallied from a first-set loss to win in three against her opponent at No. 2, clinching the match.
Mia Linam and
Kiersten Chang notched the first point for CNU, taking care of Emma McHale and Gracie Rask at No. 2 doubles (8-4). Womack and partner
Megan Bauer then gave CNU the lead, which they would not relinquish, with a win over Esme Benjamin and Emily Holderness.
After Rhodes tied things up with a win at No. 6 singles, sophomore
Raine Weis answered with a win over Agda Laakso at No. 1 (6-4, 6-4). The back-and-forth battle continued with a Rhodes win at No. 3 before Womack downed McHale at No. 5 (7-5, 7-5).
That would set up the match-clinching win for Trate, taking on Lea Letourneau in the No. 2 slot. Trate dropped a first-set tiebreaker but rebounded for the win, helping CNU improve to 3-8 on the season. Trate won the match 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Christopher Newport will nesxt take the courts on Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. as they welcome Washington and Lee University to the Eyre Courts.
