NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team dropped to 3-9 on the season Saturday afternoon after suffering a 9-0 setback to No. 25 Washington and Lee (11-4).
The Captains' grueling schedule continued as CNU faced the sixth nationally-ranked opponent in 12 matches this Spring. On Saturday, the Captains fell behind, 3-0, after doubles and the visiting Generals then swept the singles matchups as well.
The closest bout of the day came at No. 1 doubles where CNU's
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis, ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic South, stretched Lauren Long and Gabi Moss to a tiebreaker before falling, 8-7. The other two doubles matches wrapped up in 8-4 finals as the Generals took a 3-0 lead into singles.
Mia Linam snagged a team-high nine games in singles play, but ultimately suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss at No. 3 singles against Izzy Koziol. Koziol is ranked No. 24 in the Atlantic South reigon and Linam
Kendra Womack was the lone Captain to capture a set, earning a first-set win against Margaret Carlton, 6-4.
CNU will next face No. 30 Mary Washington on Wednesday, April 5.
