NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on their cross-water rivals amidst a beautiful Spring afternoon at the Eyre Courts, 27th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis shut out the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 9-0. The Captains improved to 2-8 with the victory, sweeping doubles and singles play in the match.
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis continued their exceptional start to the season, improving to 7-3 overall at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win against Alexa Brewster and Anna Rogers. The duo has now moved into the top-five all-time at Christopher Newport in career doubles victories at the No. 1 position. Weis and Trate have combined for 17 career wins in two years as a tandem, matching the pairing of Marion Gloor and Kim Morrissett in 2013. Their 23 career wins together overall rank sixth in program lore, matching Kate Huck and Johanna Ranta-aho on the all-time chart.
After the Captains' top tandem moved up the list, the rest of the squad rolled to wins in doubles as well.
Kiersten Chang and
Mia Linam paired up for an 8-1 win at No. 2, taking down Christine Zalameda and Shannon Lewes; at No. 3,
Megan Bauer and
Kendra Womack teamed together for an 8-2 win over Sophia Bibbo and Maya Brown.
Moving into singles action, the top five lines were two-match winners for CNU while
Harper Minarik jumped in at No. 6 to close out the shutout for CNU. Weis earned her second win of the day at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set victory against Brewster; Trate grabbed her second by downing Zalameda in a 6-2, 6-0 final. Linam (6-1, 6-0), Chang (6-0, 6-2), and Womack (6-0, 6-0) each quickly retired their opponents before Minarik stepped in for a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday morning as they play host to Rhodes College at 10:00 a.m.
