NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face its third top-25 test of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Captains welcome No. 11 York (Pa.) to town for a non-conference game at Jennings Family Stadium.
Coming into the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 2-2 on the season, including 1-2 at home. Meanwhile, the Spartans are 1-1 overall and 0-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with
Kenna McCarthy and
Caroline Suder calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 13-9 setback against Shenandoah last Saturday. Against the Hornets,
Kelsey Winters recorded five points, including three assists.
Syd Guidi also landed a hat-trick, while
Maddie Rusinko pocketed four of the squad's 11 caused turnovers.
Celia Kelaher and
Riley Rafterry-Lee also had a pair of takeaways in the game.
With her work on Saturday, Winters inched closer to the school's career assists record. The two-time All-American now has 149 helpers over the past four years. That is just one shy of matching the all-time mark of 150, which was established by Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey from 2008-11.
Along with Winters,
Kendall Krause sits just three points shy of reaching 100 for her career. The reigning All-American would become only the 24th player in school history to accomplish that feat.
So far this season, Christopher Newport ranks 16th in the NCAA in takeaways-per-game. The Captains have averaged 15 caused turnovers in their four appearances this year. Among the headliners on the defensive end,
Emma Jackson leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 13 takeaways, while Rusinko is tied for fourth with six. Kelaher and Krause also have five apiece.
York (Pa.) also comes into the weekend after suffering a setback last Saturday. The Spartans dropped a 12-10 decision at No. 8 Franklin & Marshall. Although YCP had a 10-9 lead early in the fourth stanza, the Diplomats scored the game's final three goals to steal the win. Sydney Mentzer led the visitors with four tallies, while Kiersten Blanchard had eight draw controls.
So far this season, Mentzer and Teresa Matthias are tied for the team-lead with seven points, while Blanchard has six to go along with 13 draws. Defensively, Bella Garabo has a team-best .542 save percentage, while McKenna Seashole has a 10.00 goals-against-average. Sarah Christensen also leads the team with three caused turnovers.
Saturday's contest will mark the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs. Overall, York (Pa.) holds an 8-0 edge in the series, including a 21-8 triumph in the last showdown on March 30, 2019. For the Captains, Krause and Rafterry-Lee are the only holdovers from that meeting with Krause earning a start on the midfield unit as a freshman, while Rafterry-Lee appeared as a reserve on the defensive unit.
Following Saturday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the team hosts No. 17 Chicago at 4 p.m.
