No. 23 Christopher Newport Earns 7-2 Win Over Washington College on Saturday Afternoon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis picked up the team's first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, dropping Washington College of Maryland (0-2) by a final score of 7-2. Four Captains secured wins in both singles and doubles in the match as Christopher Newport swept doubles action. 

CNU got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bout by earning wins at all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Raine Weis and Tessa Trate downed Irene Meng and Piper Sartison (8-1) to earn their tenth win together this season. Weis and Trate also earned singles victories at 1 and 2, respectively, to help lead the Captains to the win. 

At No. 1 singles, Weis defeated Meng (6-2, 6-2) and at No. 2, Trate earned a win over Eva Kading (6-3, 6-2). 

Also earning multiple wins on the day was the No. 2 tandem, Mia Linam and Kiersten Chang. The CNU pair earned an 8-3 win over Kading and her partner, Soleil Namunyola, before moving on to win at 3 and 4 in singles. Linam gave up just a single game at No. 3 singles, defeating Sartison by a final score of 6-1, 6-0, and Chang continued the straight-set success with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Namunyola. 

Finishing out the sweep in doubles was Megan Bauer and Logan Glen teaming up for an 8-6 win at No. 3. They outlasted Isabella Sorhegui and Bin Nguyen for the victory at the James River CC. 

Christopher Newport improves to 1-5 on the season before heading out to the West Coast to take on three teams from California. CNU will first visit Redlands on Wednesday, March 8 before facing Caltech on March 10 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 11.
