NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On a warm afternoon at the Eyre Courts, Christopher Newport women's tennis took on NCAA Division I Longwood University (2-4) in the team's first outdoor match of the Spring season. The Captains fell, 7-2, to the Lancers, despite an impressive showing from sophomore
Raine Weis. The second-year star earned a pair of wins in the dual, pairing with
Tessa Trate for the win at No. 1 doubles before also capturing the victory at No. 1 singles.
Weis and Trate paired up for the tandem's third win of the Spring season and ninth victory as a pair overall in 2022-23. The Captains' top duo captured an 8-6 win over Emma Nurgazieva and Nina Hederich in the match, marking the fourth victory over a Division I opponent this season. Trate and Weis won over Hampton and Longwood in the fall before adding another wiin over each in the official dual slate this February.
Longwood secured the other two doubles points to carry a 2-1 lead into singles play. Weis then snagged a straight-set win at No. 1 singles to continue her strong start to the season. Weis downed Nurgazieva (6-2, 6-4) to add to her team-high singles win total this season with five.
Tessa Trate narrowly missed her first singles win of the Spring when she was edged in a third-set tiebreaker on the No. 1 line against Maria Saez. The Lancers player won the first set, 7-5, before Trate rallied with a big win in the second, 6-1. Saez picked up the win, 10-8, in the third.
Kiersten Chang won four games in her second set against Karina Rizvanova at No. 4 while
Mia Linam,
Anna Campbell, and
Logan Glen each picked up a pair of game wins in their matches.
Christopher Newport will look to bounce back on Saturday, February 25 as they play host to Washington (Md.) at 12:30 p.m.
