LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Captains' win streak to start the spring was halted on Friday afternoon as Washington and Lee edged out CNU men's tennis, 5-4.
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and
Vincent Truong each won in singles for the Captains after taking a 2-1 lead through doubles.
Christopher Newport got a big win over a regionally-ranked pair at No. 1 doubles when
Nesh Kumaresan and
Alec Strause paired for a thrilling 8-7 (11-9) win on the top line. Taking on Evan Erb and Evan Brady, ranked No. 4 in the Atlantic South regional rankings released on November 17, the Captains top tandem outlasted the home team to pick up the victory.
CNU also captured an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles where
Alex Seretis and
Ahun Vodela defeated Will Kistler and Eli Hirshberg.
In singles action, Washington and Lee rebounded with straight set wins at No. 1 and 3, but the remaining four singles bouts were highly competitive. At No. 2, Porsmyr Hansen shook off a first-set loss to down Brady by a final score of 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 3 bout saw
Ahun Vodela earn a second set win before falling to Will Kistler by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Jake Dolphin, at No. 5, secured a 7-5 win in the first set against Connor Coleman before the Generals player answered with wins, 6-3, 6-2, in the remaining matchup. Truong wrapped up the day at No. 6 with the Captains other victory in singles, defeating James Kurani.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday against No. 33 Sewanee at 11:00 a.m.
