NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face its first top-10 test of the season on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when the Captains host No. 8 Washington & Lee at Jennings Family Stadium.

Both squads boast matching 1-0 records after winning their season openers over the weekend. Christopher Newport is currently 1-0 at home, while Wednesday will be Washington & Lee's first road tilt of the year.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off of a commanding 21-2 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Against the Marlins, Julia Iapicca erupted for a career-high six points, including five goals, while making her first appearance since 2021. Meanwhile, Kelsey Winters chipped in with a hat-trick, while Brookelyn Morrison, Sloane McDonald, Hope Hunter, and Syd Guidi all added multi-goal efforts as well.

In addition to her finishing skills, Winters also handed out six assists, which equaled the ninth-highest total in school history. Making her performance even more incredible, she connected with six different Captains during the game. With that showcase, she joined Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey and former legend Becca Geist as the only standouts in program history to assist on goals by six different players in a single game.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Christopher Newport limited Virginia Wesleyan to only six total shots, which equaled the fourth-fewest by an opponent in the past decade. Headlining that performance, Emma Jackson was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after registering four takeaways, three ground balls, and seven draw controls.

Along with Jackson, Morrison and Kendall Krause caused three turnovers apiece, while Winters, Hunter, Maddie Rusinko, Taylor Schoolar, and Alexa Romero had two each. Overall, the Captains had 27 total takeaways, which marked the second-highest amount in school history and the most in 20 years.

Washington & Lee was equally impressive over the weekend as the Generals knocked off No. 6 Franklin & Marshall, 15-8, on Sunday. Allie Schwab and Hanna Bishop both had five points for the victors, while Caroline Kranich pocketed a career-high 11 saves. W&L was especially effective from the eight-meter arc as the squad converted all six of its free-position shots, including a pair of strikes by both Schwab and Julia Thomson.

Picked as the preseason favorites in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the Generals return three All-Americans from last year's team, which advanced to the Elite Eight and finished with a 19-3 overall record. Schwab, Bishop, and Eugenie Rovegno all collected national plaudits for their work last year, while Rovegno is also the reigning VaSID All-State Defensive Player of the Year.

Wednesday's match-up will mark the 15th meeting between the two programs with Washington & Lee holding a 14-1 edge in the series. The Generals won last year's tilt, 16-6, as Thomson collected six points for the Generals, while Krause landed a hat-trick for the Captains.

Following the midweek contest, Christopher Newport will hit the road for a showdown at No. 24 Haverford on Saturday at noon.
