LEXINGTON, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon, falling to 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve on a neutral court. The Captains (0-4) were led by another outstanding performance at No. 1 doubles by
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis, albeit in a losing effort on Saturday.
One day after taking down the top-ranked doubles tandem in the nation, Trate and Weis were tasked with facing another talented pairing on Saturday. Taking on Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey on the top line, Trate and Weis were locked in a marathon battle for the team point in a tiebreaker. Back-and-forth the tandems went before finally the Spartans pair edged out the Captains in an 8-7 (13-11) final score.
In singles play,
Kendra Womack had the finest showing for Christopher Newport on Saturday, facing Katalina Wang on the No. 4 line. The CNU veteran won two games in the first set and narrowly missed nipping her Case Western counterpart in the second before suffering a 6-2, 7-6 (2) loss.
Mia Linam moved up to play No. 2 against a nationally-ranked foe and won a team-best eight games between her two sets. She faced No. 39 McCloskey on the second line, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Christopher Newport closes out the week and will return to action on Friday, February 24 with another Division I program on the schedule. The Captains will take on Longwood University at home next week with match time set for Noon on Friday. Following, CNU will also welcome Washington (Md.) for a 12:30 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
