NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis program picked up a second straight win to start the 2023 spring season on Friday evening when the Captains captured an 8-1 win over Centre College (0-1). CNU swept doubles action before picking up wins in five of the six singles bouts.
Four Christopher Newport players won both in singles and doubles, led by senior
Alec Strause at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen,
Ahun Vodela, and
Vincent Truong also won twice on Friday, including a match-clinching victory by Porsmyr Hansen at No. 2 singles.
In doubles play, Porsmyr Hansen and Truong kicked things off with a speedy win at No. 3, downing Chase Turley and Jasper Gazzo (8-3).
Alex Seretis and Vodela then paired up for another win at No. 2 against Faraz Ghamgosar and Ben Rueff (8-4). Finishing out the doubles sweep, Strause and
Nesh Kumaresan outlasted Ty and Bo Bush (8-6) on the top line.
Moving into singles play, Strause pulled the Captains to within one point of clinching the match when he dispatched of Ghamgosar in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). That would set up the clinching point by Porsmyr Hansen as the veteran rebounded from a second set loss for a victory over Ty Bush (6-4, 2-6, 6-4).
With the match in hand, CNU went 3-1 in the remaining matches.
Jake Dolphin won in straight sets against Rueff (6-4, 6-1) at No. 5. Truong also picked up a win at No. 6 against Jett Anderson (6-4, 7-5) while Vodela finished out his strong day at No. 3 with a win over Bo Bush (6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2).
CNU improves to 2-0 on the season and will return to action on Friday, February 17 when they host Hampden-Sydney College.
